Where and why Driescher 25 kV A.C. single-pole and two-pole disconnectors, earthing switches and switches for on-load applications are used in railway elctrifaction?


25 kV AC Single-Pole and Two-Pole Disconnectors

Single-Pole Disconnectors

  • Purpose: Used to isolate a single phase of the electrical circuit.

  • Application: Typically used in railway electrification to isolate sections of the overhead catenary system for maintenance or in case of faults.

  • Operation: Manually or remotely operated, ensuring that the line is de-energized and safe to work on.

  • Design: They are designed to handle high voltages and currents, ensuring reliable disconnection even under adverse weather conditions.

Two-Pole Disconnectors

  • Purpose: Used to isolate two phases of the electrical circuit simultaneously.

  • Application: Less common in single-phase 25 kV railway systems but might be used in specific configurations or in systems with a return conductor.

  • Operation and Design: Similar to single-pole disconnectors but designed to handle two phases, ensuring safe isolation and maintenance of the power lines.

Earthing Switches

  • Purpose: Used to ground (earth) a section of the electrical circuit.

  • Application: Essential for ensuring safety during maintenance, by providing a direct path to the ground, preventing any accidental energization.

  • Operation: Usually manually operated but can also be remote-controlled. They are often interlocked with disconnectors to prevent the earthing switch from closing when the circuit is live.

  • Design: Robust design to handle fault currents and ensure effective grounding.

Switches for On-Load Applications

  • Purpose: Designed to operate under load, meaning they can open or close the circuit while current is flowing.

  • Application: Used to control power flow, manage network configuration, and isolate faults without interrupting the power supply to other sections.

  • Types:

  • Load Break Switches: Specifically designed to interrupt the load current safely.

  • Circuit Breakers: Provide protection by interrupting fault currents.

  • Operation: Can be manually or remotely operated. Equipped with mechanisms to handle the arc produced when breaking the current.

  • Design: Built to withstand high electrical and thermal stresses, ensuring safe and reliable operation under load conditions.

Importance in Railway Electrification

  • Safety: These devices are crucial for the safety of maintenance personnel and the reliable operation of the railway electrification system.

  • Reliability: They help in maintaining a reliable power supply by allowing sections to be isolated or grounded without affecting the entire network.
